Albert (Alby) Edward PACK

Sea Cadet, Merchant Navy age 14, enlisted in UK Royal Engineers aged 16, where he completed a carpentry/joinery apprenticeship. Made a Field Engineer Corporal (1951) and Tank operator (1952) then did post war bomb disposal until 1954, after the birth of his only child. Emigrated to NZ with his family in 1959. He was a member of a rifle and pistol shooting club and NZ Deer stalkers, both hunting big game and doing pest control drives. Builder of the family’s bach and cabin cruiser, and joint builder of a hovercraft.  Life member of Shirley Senior Net as tutor and later President. Avid genealogist and master joiner, we will treasure his furniture.

Born 30/9/1930, growing up in Faversham Kent. Passed 16/9/24, aged 93, with his daughter and grandkids at his side. Albert has gone to join Ivy his wife of 72 years. Loved son of Albert and Ellen (nee Hastings) Pack, and sibling to Thomas, Doreen, Stanley, Sheila and Jill (all deceased), Brian, Barry and Jeannie and all their families. Father of Yve, and her husband David Shorter, and loved grandfather of Ciara and Doug Johnston and Tyrone and Gemma Shorter. Adored great grandfather of Vanna and Zaria Johnston and Aleseia, Trilese, Eliana and Zadie Shorter. Loved and respected by all his nieces and nephews and their families in UK, NZ and USA.

Special thanks to cousin Judy and family friends Glynis and  Peter of Christchurch, for their love and care these past few years, and Bethesda Rest Home these past 10 months as we are so far away.

At Alby’s request, there will be no funeral. Our family will celebrate his and Ivy’s lives by spreading their mixed ashes at the Lewis Pass Bach they both so loved where they fished, hunted, bush walked, bird watched and communed with nature. Messages may be sent to ypack.access@xtra.co.nz.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated and may be made online at salvationarmy.org.nz.
