Peacefully, on June 18, 2025, at home in Arlington,  Virginia, with his loving family. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dearly loved father, father-in-law, grandfather, and husband. Loving father of Cristina and Peter; grandfather of Catherine (Cate) and Peter; father-in-law of Tom and Priscilla (PJ); and husband of the late Lorraine. Dearly loved by all his family Michael Cheyne (deceased), Marie and Bert Winders (both deceased) late of Invercargill, Winsome and Patrick Cody (both deceased) late of Timaru,  Sister Bernadette Cheyne OP of Auckland, David (deceased) and Pat Cheyne of Invercargill, Peter (deceased) and Moira Cheyne of Auckland, Kathy and Graeme Broad of Invercargill, James Cheyne (deceased), Janice and the late John Careswell of Invercargill.  He was much admired and dearly loved by all his nieces and nephews.  Gerard was born on September 7, 1941, in Bluff, New Zealand.  He lived with amazing grace, dignity, and kindness, and he had a profound and positive impact on all who knew him. We miss him dearly, but find comfort and peace in our beautiful memories of him. A Requiem Mass for Gerard is planned in Virginia. Details are forthcoming.
